If the owner's manual specifies synthetic or semi-synthetic 5W-30, I would insist that the shop change the oil. I would also provide the oil (AMSOIL or Mobil 1), so there wouldn't be any question about it (and if you aren't watching, ask for the empties back<g>)
Using a non-synthetic 10W-40 for a few thousand miles is unlikely to cause any problems, but it is an indication that the dealer just really isn't much concerned about proper lubrication.
