I don't think too many Saab, Volvo or Audi buyers purchase cars with prestige in mind. If they do, then they are more likely coming from Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans. All nice cars, but without the cachet of a European car. Most European car companies have a certain upscale appeal that's hard to explain.
Saab, Volvo and Audi buyers are usually intelligent buyers more interested in driving dynamics and design than a three pointed star or blue and white roundel.
Design is a subjective category, but my opinions are very negative on Mercedes-Benz designs of late. I think they are far more downscale blob mobiles than they used to be. Sure, they are nowhere near as conservative, but I think they're all a little strange looking. I actually can't think of any European cars other than Saabs and BMWs that I truly like the styling of. Audis are different and trendy, which I applaud, but many of the lines don't agree with me. Volvos are still just plain nasty, IMO! Vee-Dubs are chick cars- great for my girlfriend, but I'll pass.
