Side signal lights & speakers options

I just want to confirm the side panel lights (it is white for 2001 model)are actually for making signals, not just for beauty, aren't they ?
Most 3.5" aftermarket dash speakers (like Infinity & Pioneer) have clear sound but they lack bass. Can the rear speakers (stock ? aftermarket ?) provide enough bass ? I ordered a 2001 base 9-3 5-door and I am thinking of 3 speaker upgrade options:
1. Replace ONLY the dash speakers with full-range 3.5" speakers (Infinity 90-20kHZ)
2. Replace BOTH the dash speakers (full range Infinity ~90-20kHZ) and the rear speakers (full range Infinity or Pioneer ~28-30kHZ)
3. Replace the dash speakers with tweeters, replace the rear speakers with bass speakers/woofer, and then add a pair of Mid-range speakers to the door.
I need only acceptable sound quality (the one in an Altima & Passat are ok)
I hope #1 will work out fine for me but I would like to get advice from 9-3 owners. I don't know whether buying a component system is a good alternative or not.... Thanks
