I upgraded the speakers in my 9-3 SE (which comes with door speakers) with Infinity Kappas in the doors and rear and another brand in the dash (I don't remember at the moment -- recommended by Crutchfield) and it made a noticeable but not startling difference. Overall, it was worth it. If you search the board you'll find a number of valueable opinions.
The new dash speakers improved the clarity of the top end. The door Kappas cleaned up the low end. The new 6x9s in the back... I can't tell the difference even when I push everything to the back. As one poster mentioned here, you can probably leave them be.
I think the best move would be to add an amp and good door speakers. If you search the site here you can find the wiring diagrams and instructions for installation. I think that you can get the sound quality you're looking for by spending about $300 and an afternoon of DIY time.
