One light is definatly for saftey since it is right in the other driiver's line of sight. Volvo (another Sweedish Co.) has the same set up--it really makes sense--at the very least others drivers think you have a light out which means they realize that there is a car in front of them, call it negative awareness. (I based the aforemention on my thoughts when behind another Saab or Volvo.)
