OK to switch from regular motor to synthetic?

I just bought a '99 9-3 SE with 28k, that appears well-cared for, but it was a lease return, so I don't know the exact history. I don't know what type of oil has been used, but am willing to switch to Mobil 1, or equivalent. I have heard that it is bad for the oil seals to switch in midstream to synthetic. Any thoughts on this, and if so, what recommended viscosity? (for Colorado climate and altitude). (Factory oil filters were quite reasonable ($5.50) from local dealer).
