Ted's right on. They want to try to compete with the BMW 3 series and the Volvo S40 and S60, not to mention the numerous sport sedan offerings from Japan.
If you ask me, they're killing their niche market. I don't want a Saab luxury sports sedan. BMW does it better... so does Mercedes...so does Volvo, and so does Lexus. I want a Saab because it is (was) the best combination of sports sedan, luxury sedan, performance car, and cargo carrier. It wasn't the best in any category, but it did a lot of things very well. I like(d) Saabs for their unique versatility.
Then again, I doubt they care if they kill the niche market. They'll appeal more to the mainstream market, and likely be successful in siphoning some business from BMW/Volvo.
C'est la vie.
