Saab's radio process sucks complete ballsack.
Your radio is a Clarion, which Saab no longer uses for OEM. When the dealer gets a repair/replacement request, the radio gets shipped to Clarion, who could probably give 2 you-know-whats about a speedy fix since they're not doing any business with Saab anymore, save for the mundane repair contract. Anyhow, the radio sits in Clarion's magical warehouse until someone decides to test it, and ultimately, they may decide to repair, "repair" (ship it back and pretend they did something), or replace it.
Fact is, these radios are horrible, and I'm not wholly convinced that the newer Pioneer version is much better. However, they are incredibly expensive (sometimes in the $700 neighborhood) and waiting out the process is the most cost-effective solution. I went without a radio for the entire summer waiting for a repair, and ultimately, the dealer simply swiped a new one from a vehicle on the lot (sketchy on their part, good for me). Most dealers do not carry any new radios in inventory, and most do not carry spares to tie you over during your repair wait because they seem to "disappear". Obviously they disappear because the return/repair process is horrible and people are frustrated, but no one seems to be able to make the connection.
I would not doubt the backorder story, since Saab USA and Clarion are flooded with bad radio claims. As for the mileage inquiry, I think they are just trying to be sure that this will be a warranty issue and not something you will pay out of pocket. Either way, you submitted the claim well before the warranty expiration, so you're all set.
If I had to do it over again, I would just find that DIN sleeve and installation kit, and search for a good Alpine deck. The quality of the factory radio is, in my experience, abominable, and hardly worth the time I spent waiting for it.
