Serious acceleration issues

This morning I attempted to accelerate into traffic from a stop. At about 3000 RPM in first gear (A/T), the car suddenly lurched, going from quick acceleration into hard engine braking repeatedly until I eased off the gas. Very dangerous as I almost got hit. Did one more test to make sure the tires hadn't slipped on something and got the same result. If I kept it under 2500, the tranmission behaved normally.
Just took it into the dealer (taking it slow), but any ideas what caused this? Transmission fluid level fine. Car was warmed up (hour into driving when this happened). Put over 300 miles on it yesterday, mostly highway with no problems.
1999 93 Conv, auto, 36K. Looks like I'll get another Dodge Neon loaner. Oh, joy.
