Air distribution box update & questions, Eric?

I couldn't find the posts anymore so I'll try starting the string again.
I had asked the service manager from Fox Saab in Grand Rapids to go to bat for me and see if Saab would pay for fixing the air distribution box, even though the car was out of warranty. The service manager from Fox Saab just called and said that Saab has agreed to "fix" the air distribution box. I think I'm going to like this dealership.
He described the fix as having something to do with a shim. I had to cut the conversation short so I didn’t get all the details.
Here are the questions.
I don’t remember reading anywere about using a shim to fix any air distribution box problems. I thought the idea was to reduce friction in the system.
Should I request the new design distribution box?
Should I attempt to beef up the plastic control rod. This part is anunbelievably poor piece, which will probably fail again?
After some more playing with system, I believe temperature has a really big effect on the stiffness of the box (daaah). Moving the knob in small movements before trying to make a change from one set of vents to the other seems to make it slide easier. I haven’t tried running the heat on high before making a vent change, but me thinks it might help.
Do these problems mostly happen with cars operated in cold climates? Were do you folks that have had these problems live?
I would really appreciate any thoughts folks have. I would also appreciate the part number for the new improved distribution box.
Thanks for the help everyone
