There is a big difference between cold, dry snow (maybe typical in Calgary) and the slop we typically get in upstate NY. I think that snow tires are a lot better here. The other argument is that if you are keeping your car for a while, you extend the life of your summer tires, and keep your nice alloys out of the salt.
