"I know the “older” Saab generation is fixated on the Hatch, but in reality it’s just not that useful."
Just b/c you don't think it's useful, doesn't mean that in "reality" it's not useful for others. I'm of the "newer" saab generation and I love the hatch. My wife and I have our families scattered all over the Eastern seaboard and we are always loading up to travel anywhere from 1.5-4 hours about 2 times per months. Sometimes a normal trunk would suffice, but 50% of the time we have so much crap to haul (including extra passengers) that it's nice to be able to stuff the hatch and still have room for passengers in the back. It's a pleasant departure from having 4 people in the car with bags stuffed around them.
I also fit a very long dresser in it with the seats down and was still able to close the hatch. I know this isn't an everday occurence, but then again not everyone uses the bed of their pick up truck everyday but it's nice to have when you really need it.
I also love having the extra space when I drive a few buddies with our hockey gear or when a bunch of us go kayaking. The hatch just fits my lifestyle more then a sedan and I'm glad I was able to get a 2002 SE just before they were all sold out.
Enjoy your Saab, but try to avoid telling others what is and is not useful.
