I have the '01 SE, which is the same as the '02 SE with premium package, except w/o leather door inserts and seats that say "turbo".
I love the car, and wouldn't for a second consider the '03 over it. The versatility of the hatchback is great, the torquiness of the engine is great, and if I want better handling, I'll install VRK and rear sway bar before I'd buy an '03.
Saying this is like starting a holy war, but I refuse to recognize the new engine or the new 9-3 as a Saab. Any Saab that shares a platform with a Pontiac and a Chevy Malibu just ain't a Saab in my book. '02 is the last 9-3 with the classic Saab inline-4. That's an engine with 25+ years of Saab developmental history. Tradition and refinement beats all-aluminum for me any day. Plus my engine doesn't die when I'm driving down the road.
Anyway, I consider myself fortunate to have one of the last of a breed.
I dunno how to help you with Viggen vs. SE. Just depends how much VROOM you really want. I think the SE is more than enough huevos. The Viggen has more. Drive both, go with your gut. If you're willing to sacrifice practicality, the '03 convertible is truly the last of the breed, and an absolutely beautiful machine.
Cheers,
'Roo
