It has to do with design parameters and provenness.
The 94-02 900/9-3, despite its break in lineage from the C900, drew from the things that gave Saab its place in the automitive world.
First, the engine. The B20x engines have everything from the grandest rally credentials to high mileage accomplishments to their credit. The new ones do not. Who knows, they may exceed the old ones, but I for one need some history in an engine before I believe in it.
Second, design parameters. The 94+ 900/9-3 layout addressed very similar parameters as the c900 it displaced. Basically; appeal strongly to that small group of people who will pay a premium for a high performance freeway car with the practicality of a city runabout. In the US at least, no other car was degined with these competing goals.
The new car's design parameters appear to be the same as every other car in the 25-35k bracket: appeal vaguely to that broad group of people who want a fast european sedan without busting the bank.
There's nothing wrong with the new car. However, it has no appeal distinct from other offerings in the same class. As it is, I would choose amongst it only if I got a better deal than on the other usual suspects in this segment. There's no Saab "cache" with this one.
