First, the simple answer on the battery. It doesn't have to be a Saab battery. Period. It only needs to fit physically in the tray and have, at least the same cold cranking amps as recommended by the specs. These dealers who perpetuate the myth that it has to be Saab oil, transmission fluid, battery, etc. are only revealing their own ignorance or greed or both.
Now, the oil pan. I can only imagine the oil plug was cross threaded or overtorqued the last time the oil was changed. If this is indeed the case, $900.00 soundS about right, but, that $900.00 will include replacement of the oil pan. Saab oil pans are cast alloy and can be damaged by improper
procedure in a simple oil change. Have the mechanic show you the damage. Better yet, get under the car and scratch an identifying mark on the pan itself, just to make sure they aren't trying to swindel you.
Honestly, the battery is what gets my radar up. Buyer Beware.
Best to you, Doug P '99 9-3 58k aftermarket battery 2 years and going strong!
