The thermo switch is an overheating protection sensor sealed in the AC compressor.
You can find an exploded view of the Sanden AC compressor on the Sanden Europe website at http://www(dot)sanden-europe(dot)com, click on spare parts, TRS 105, then click on the hyperlink on top of the page.
When an A/C request is sent by the control panel inside your car, the following conditions need to be met for the compressor to engage
-the pressure in the condenser need to be between 2 and 27 bar (hence the importance of having enough but not an excessive amount of refrigerant)
-the temperature in the evaporator, measured by an antifreeze sensor that can also be faulty, need to be over +4°C
-the engine temperature need to be below +126°C
I these 3 conditions are met, then the engine management grounds the A/C compressor relay and power is supplied to the compressor through the compressor thermo switch.
The Saab part number is 5048566.
When the dealer realised the sensor was faulty on my 9-3, they initially told me the whole compressor need to be replaced. But a Sanden engineer I called told me that repair kits were made available to Saab, information I passed to the dealer.
I now have the thermo contact, but it is not yet installed as the compressor need to be taken out of the car (contrary to the NG 900 which has a smaller AC compressor with a screwed in sensor).
