I'm having the same problem as you guys are describing: At first, after starting the car in the morning, the A/C works fine, for maybe 10-15 minutes, then it just blows hot air (same temperature as the outside air, or maybe a little WARMER!) on me. If I turn the A/C OFF, and wait a few minutes, and turn it back on, I might get a couple more minutes out of it, and then it's just dead for a good long time. Mine's a 2001 9/3 Viggen.
I had the freon level/pressure checked and it's fine. The compressor isn't making any weird noises, the serpentine belt isn't slipping, and the condensor isn't full of bugs. I've got 77K miles on the car. I'm thinking that perhaps there's some kind of sensor that tells the A/C to turn off when the engine gets too warm, and the sensor is out of whack so it turns the A/C off more "conservatively" than it ought to: this would account for the A/C working until (more-or-less) the engine warms up completely. It would also account for the fact that it seems worse on hotter days -- though of course I have to factor in the fact that I NOTICE the absence of air conditioning more on hotter days! The dealer has been no help at all because, oddly, the car seems to "behave" when I take it in to them to look at it. I'm curious whether you folks think I should keep trying the dealer, or whether an A/C specialty shop would be a better bet -- in other words, who'd be better at this: the guys with tons of experience with Saabs, or the guys with tons of experience with air conditioning? I'm out of warranty, of course, due to the high mileage.
And of course, it would be REALLY helpful to hear that "Oh, there's a component that ALWAYS goes bad at about 77K miles and causes this problem, and it's the XXX sensor."
