yes, compressor pulley.
i had a look tonight; removed airbox, slackened belt, removed lower plastic covers.
the compressor pulley had lots of play.
i removed the nut on the end of the shaft, and was able to remove a clutch-like pressure plate. it still looked good. the pulley itself was not coming off.
the 2 bearings could be seen and examined. the outer small sealed bearing still looked ok. the inner large shielded bearing was bad; the metal shield was loose; i removed it; the ball bearings had lots of play and were dry; the grease had burned off.
ideally i would just press off the pully assembly and replace with new. i understand that only the full compressor assembly is available. bummer.
a nice workaround would be to just press on an idler-style pulley and forego the a/c; a dream i think.
i am braced for my call-to-the-dealer tomorrow.
