Steve,
Unfortunately your dealer's estimate may not be far off, as far as dealers go. Both hoses (Upper and lower) from eEuroparts (site sponsor) are around 260. There is a third "A/C hose" that is listed for 141. I know my dealer quoted me around $350 a couple of times in the past two years to replace the upper and lower 2 hoses. This does not include the other bits and pieces, including o-rings, r134, environmental fees, discharge and recharge, and the most costly, labour. Not sure what your dealer charges, but prices have been rated anywhere from $65-$100+ per hour. Probably will take around 3 hours (seems most items take 3 hours).
That puts cost anywhere from $700+ depending on dealer markup and labour, which makes the $802 not outlandish. Suggestions include:
living with it (learn to recharge yourself - maybe once or twice a year), very cost-effective
indy (anyone in your area?) - would lower labour cost
a/c specialty place
I hope this helps! Other than the environmental worries, not sure why this could not be a DIY. It seems, unhook one hose, replace. (Obviously a little oversimplification here) Would cost only parts. I know that releasing R134 into the "air" is illegal in most places, but since the system is already empty, there should be little concern. If not empty, pay A/C place to evac, go home, replace, come back for recharge. Anyone have thoughts about this?
I hope this helps! Thanks.
