Higher MPG's on lower octane gas...

I recently noticed that using a lower octane fuel has increased my MPG's and not sacrificing performance. What gives? I have been running high octane since new. Last year, I put 17" SAAB rims on it and I've experienced lower MPG's ever since. I mean a drop from 29MPG average with 30/70 hi/city driving to about 25 average MPG according to my calculations and SID.
So with the gas prices so high, i put in 89 octane and my MPGs increased to about 28 again. Any ideas?
