Drove a 2005 9-3 SS with leather and everything as a loaner. Must say, it road like a 9-5 which is not a compliment as I don't care for the Lexus feel. Found the steering to be Toyotaesque (mushy and overboosted) and the seats were downright unacceptable (slippery) with very poor bolstering. Did not care for the SID or the cab forward design - what happend to the wrap around windshield and chair like seating. Did not like the many button on the dash. Hated the placement of the window controls and door locks. Did like the mirror controls. Great stereo compared to my 99 and the braking was also much improved. Still much prefer the road feel of my 99-93 which is more fun to drive and offers vastly superior road feel. Boost on newer car did not stir my soul, it was too linear to be enjoyed. My 99 has more oomph off the line and frankly, I prefer the iconic styling of my 99 to the bland (lets all be a BMW lemming) look of the 2005. I would never trade in my old 99 9-3 to buy a new 9-3. Sadly based on my rental experience, I have found the S40 T5 AWD, Ford Focus and Mazda 3s to be more fun to drive than a 9-3 SS and I would therefore look for a Volvo S40 or Audi A-3/A-4 before buying a new 9-3 SS. Bottom line is the new 9-3 SS is not an improvement over the 99-9-3 as a driver's car in my opinion. It makes a fine alternative to an Accord or Camry or possibly a Passat although I like the Passat better than the 9-3.
