Well, this week it happened to me what so many of you others have experianced after doing a service on the car including replacing the fuel filter.

I just did a regular 60K service and when I was done the car had a long cranking time before firing up. It went on for 3-4 start ups and then disappeared so I didn't think more about it.

The customer picked up the car but came back after some days mentioning starting problems including long cranking time.

When I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge I noticed how the residual pressure bled off (dropping to zero) in the same instance as the engine was turned off.
I started and shut off the engine several times with the same result.
That could mean only 3 or 4 different things. Leaking injectors, leaking fuel pressure regulator, bad fuelpump back flow valve or a leaking fuel line somewhere.

Leaking fuel line is easy to rule out since you just need to look or smell for a fuel leak.

Leaking injectors, back flow valve or fuel pressure regulator is more tricky to rule out and it is more labor involved.

What I did as a test was to start the car and use a small tip hammer and lightly tap on the fuel pressure regulator housing for awhile. When I shut off the engine, the fuel pressure stayed at 35 Psi and was holding pressure for at least an hour.

Several tests returned the same good result.

My suspicion is that some dirt (eg, rubber pieces from original fuel filter sealing washers) are entering the engine side of fuel filter and gets lodged in the fuel pressure regulators narrow passages allowing the fuel to bleed through to the tank.

I have been very careful blowing away those rubber pieces on the banjo bolts whenever I see them and use copper washers instead, but maybe a little bit of dirt speck managed to make its way to the regulator?

Hope this might help someone else out there.
