Rotted Strut Tower in 97 900S

After nearly nine years of wonderful service, my 97 900S with 133K miles was deemed irreperable yesterday after it was discovered that the strut towers had become rotted/corroded beyond repair.
The service people at my local Saab dealer in New Jersey, who initially suspected the suspension "clunking/creaking" noise was due to bad struts and tie rod, eventually discovered the rotted condition once they disassembled the struts. Bad news - a total loss. :-(
This is the first time they had ever seen such terrible corrosion on the strut towers of this particular model.
I don't know what I could have done differently to maintain the car, but hopefully others on this board will benefit from what I have learned the hard way and take precautions to guard against this type of corrosion on their NG900s. Never thought my car would go down this way.
But, it was a real pleasure owning my 97 900S. I also truly enjoyed participating on this board, which helped make my ownership experience that much better. The wealth of Saab knowledge on Saabnet is incomparable.
My car, and the people on this board, will be sorely missed.
Good bye and good luck with your NG900s.
