99 9-3 convertible trouble

Having trouble with top on this car and can't find help that I feel comfortable. When attempting to put top down the back of the top doesn't always want to start up. Sometimes it needs a little help to get started. When it doesn't get started I get "soft top failure" on SID. When this message happens I release switch and try again and usually get it to work some more. When trying to put top up things go mostly well but still have to stop and go at times. When the tonneau cover is to close some times you need to give a little push to get it to start.
I took car to the closest SAAB dealer about 60 miles away. They spent about an hour looking at the trouble and told me that the drive unit was stripped. The service writer told me that the repairs would be $6300 and take about 22 hours. I declined their service.
My questions are:
1) If I don't hear anything like stripped gears when the top is moving, is this a reasonable diagnosis?
2) Is it possible that this repair could really take 22 hours?
3) Is this a major known problem that I may not be able to find good used parts?
Thanks to anyone who can help me.
