Failed A/C Compressor?

On the way home yesterday the A/C suddenly stopped blowing cold air. It took me a minute or so to react since I was stopped at a light and thought that might have something to do with it (it was well over 100 here yesterday).
Shortly thereafter I shut down the compressor (Econ) and then turned the whole system off. There was no change in vehicle performance or noise. When I got home (5 min later), I popped the hood and was met with whisps of smoke rising from behind the RH headlight and a terrible burnt smell.
Did the compressor just sieze up, or what? I called the dealer and he said I could bring the car in whenever, but he didn't know when he'd be able to work on it.
Can I drive the car with the compressor siezed up (if that's what's wrong), or do I have to flatbed the car to a shop?
Car is a '99 Viggen, 92k miles, rapidly disintigrating...
