From my experiences with a busted check valve and hose my boost was very jerky when accelerating hard, the engine wasn't sputtering though. Also the boost would never get above the middle of the gauge. When I replaced the valve and hose my boost went into the red for a day or two...probably the ECU readapting...now it goes to the edge of the red which is where it has always been before the leaks.
As far as the PCV nipple fit, did you get a new bushing with it? If so to get it to fit tight into the valve cover you need to have no hoses connected to it. Insert the tabbed end on anangle so it gets inside the VC hole and then twist and push it in. You'll know it when it's in there. then rotate it so you can connect the hoses. Check all your other hoses too. Mine was split at the top and again at the bend into the oil trap.
When you have the small check valve hose off it's a good idea to blow/suck air throught it. If you can suck in you'll get nasty gas/oil taste in your mouth and that means your check valve is busted. You should only be able to blow air through it.
