I currently have a 99 9-3 base, 5 speed that I purchased used Dec 2001. Currently has 103K miles.
Am at a decision point of sorts whether to keep or sell. Basically I am faced with the following repairs:
1) heater box fiasco - have estimates of $1200-$1400, plus I need a new MCC panel. so proabably another $200+ there too....;<
2) transmission - shift quality is getting to the point where a Mack truck shifts more crisply than the Saab - basically the issue is occassional lock out of 2 nd gear, hard 1st gear shifts, and reverse grinding. Have estimates of about $2K ish if I need to rebuild or get a refurbished tranny. While they are doing that, I also want to get the clutch replaced as it seems to be slipping somewhat.
3) SID - never worked - but I can live with a failed SID - but it does cause a problem when I get an service message since i can't read it....not sure if Saab has cracked the code here.
On the other hand...the car is paid for and I do like the hatchback versatility. In addition, I have done the following (in addition to oil changes) below. NOTE - the work in Sept 2004 was due to me driving thru a puddle which subsequently hydrolocked the engine....So over time I have replaced lots of things. Sort of like a having a new car.....
Date Service Mileage
May-06 Exhaust, Front Brakes 97000
Mar-06 Idler Pulley and serpentine belt 96500
Oct-04 Trionic ECM 91000
Sep-04 AIC Motor, Oxygen Sensor 80000
Sep-04 Plugs, AC Valves, Recharge, engine temperture sensor 80000
May-04 DI Cassette 74000
Apr-04 Manual Transmission Service 72000
Aug-03 60K Service + idler pully + serpentine belt 62000
Sep-03 heater control knob 64400
Dec-02 Refit and reposition BPC Solenoid 48000
Oct-02 Cleaned and Lubed heater box 45000
Jun-02 Replace antenna motor, check shifter 38000
Feb-02 Rear tranny mount replaced 31000
Jan-02 Tranny mount loose - suspension retorqued 30000
So what do you all think? Is it worth throwing the $ into the car and keeping it for another 3-5 years? I did run some numbers and if I can keep my expenses in the outyears to under $1K, its cheaper per month than buying a used Honda CRV or Accord - unless I keep the Honda for 10 years.
Thanks for input....
