...you have to fix the heater and tranny to make it salable; otherwise it's not worth more than $2k or so. The alternative is fixing them and selling the car for 6-7K(or whatever the going rate is). Or you could keep the car another 3-5 years (as you say) and hope to amortize the repair costs.
I'd vote for fixing, because it gives you two options (sell afterwards or keep). You might also be able to provide a warranty on the rebuilt tranny or clutch.
