If you remove the side panel on the console that is at the passenger foot compartment, you will see everything.
there is one bolt accessable by opening the glove box.
there is one bolt at the bottom of it by the pass foot well right in the middle -- cant miss it.
and i had another one or two because i was removing a phone mount that was bolted onto the front and this side panel.
the panel slides out towards the hood and there are three alignment slide/finger/slots that hold it in place to the front console.
take out your floormats and you'll have all the room you need to slide it out and in there you'll see everything. the power for the lighter slides off (you may be able to splice into it for aux power). there's also a lead for the lighter light. both slide off.
the lighter (metal piece) can then pop out the through the front and the plastic piece can too, but you need to angle it out.
you can then see the small compartment you are talking about from the rear. the clips etc that the above posts refer to, all will be visible.
there's a lot of room in there. one could probably make a larger compartment even or modify it to your heart's content.
all screws use the same torx head.
have fun.
