I just took a closer look this morning. I had my wife get in the car and move the shifter while I took a look at the linkage with a work light. The "ball" end of the linkage is still connected.
The linkage appears to be moving and engaging okay. When the shifter is moved, the linkage moves all including the parts the lead into the transmission.
I grabbed the transmission end of the linkage and gave it a few tugs to verify that it was still connected and nothing was slipped or broken.
Can the linkage fail in such a way as to still be connected, but no longer shift? Is there anyway I can rule out an issue with the transmission?
I still think it's something with the linkage, because it happened so suddenly. Stopped at a red light and when I went to go on green, I couldn't shift.
Thanks for your input so far, I really appreciate it.
