I tried it last year on a 1997 2.3 engine with some sludge buildup. I drained the oil, added 2 quarts of flush and let it set for a day. (Didn't run the engine without oil!) Some of the coked particles were removed when I drained the flush but I ended up dropping the oil pan to cut the balance chain because it was making noise. There was still alot of crud left when I finally had a chance to see the sump and oil pickup.
The car seems ok at this point after doing a couple Auto-Rx treatments and continuing with 2 oz maintenance doses of Auto-Rx.
So here's my bottom line assessment. If you don't have a sludge problem the flushes are probably fine for removing minor buildup and varnish. They aren't a cure for sludge but will probably keep your engine clean if you don't have a serious problem. Auto-Rx seems to do a better job but it too has limits and it costs much more than solvent flushes.
Some remaining questions:
How important is heat to the cleaning process? Gunk recommends running ad idle for 5 minutes but I didn't want to run the car without oil.
How much of the flush remains afterwards? Is there enough to cause any problems by diluting the oil?
