Two quick thoughts:
First, hitting the aluminum seems a bit risky despite your mentioning going at it gently. Hitting the cast iron is a safer way to avoid damaging bits. That's a ball joint in there. Aluminum bends. Smack it around some at the steel ball will be rolling around on some oval socket. Probably not a problem but why take the risk.
Second, this is a fairly standard method of taper joint removal but the seemingly better way to do this is with TWO hammers. Using two allows you to overcome the space issue and eliminates the chance of a misfire that rips a rubber boot or mars heavily the knuckle. Just Use a small sledge if you have one and hold it to the knuckle joint. Hit the sledge as hard as you want with a second hammer. Enjoy.
