Springs are constantly under a lot of stress and of course the metal is already processed in such a way to make it on the stiff/brittle side of the equation rather than the soft/bendy side. Although, I've owned three Saabs and never had a broken spring on them. Did have one on a Honda Civic and Chevy pickup, so I think it is somewhat common. Don't feel bad!
BTW, on that Chevy pickup, I replaced just one spring with a direct-replacement spring from the dealer and that side was literally 2 inches higher than the other. So I had to replace both sides. The front end shop said the springs get weak and sag and they see it all the time. So you'll probably want to replace both sides on your car too, unless you get a used one. Also, you might want to check with a shop to find out the details on lubricating the spring. If your coil was binding up, it may have caused the break. Or it might have an insert between the spring and the contact point.
