I've heard of this happening due to the OnStar unit, which was standard in 2001 but is no longer functional after the January 2008 analog -> digital changeover. Attempting to activate an OnStar function will normally cause the radio to switch to the telephone input - have you tried pressing the SRC button on the steering wheel to see if you can switch back?
I would search the board for more info, someone has probably posted instructions on how to remove the now-useless OnStar unit.
