Clutches don't slip in the lower gears because of the torque multiplication makes less resistance, greater acceleration of the vehicle. Clutches slip in top gear because of the higher wind resistance, the tack needle sorta' floats higher than the actual speed and settles back down when you back out of the throttle. You can continue to drive quite a long time with a mildly slipping clutch, just don't go up any big hills in top gear......If you do you can smoke the clutch very quickly.
