I don't know how long your '97 will run, but by '96 900se turbo is still running strong and lookin' good at 149,600 miles.
I too had to replace the exhaust system components awhile back, but it beat the heck out of the price of a new car.
One a car hits 10 years or so, the resale value is so low that it really is worth it to just keep running it for as long as you can. Or until you fall in love with something else.
I'm thinking about replacing mine, but the Saab is a great winter car (I have a set of snows for it, which make it even better) and everything is still working well.
Moreover, I REALLY LIKE the car and don't see anything out there in the way of a new car that has the same combination of utility, economy, and performance.
Full disclosure:
Well, today I replaced the stereo bass amp, as one channel was intermittent, and that cost me $100 via eBay. Prior to that, I replaced the door speakers as the cones were ripped all the way around - $60 for a pair of 6.5" that fit well.
Oh, and some of the SID lcd elements don't come on as consistently as they used to. No surprise there.
