What you are most likely smelling at idle is not exhaust, but crankcase fumes leaking from a deteriorated crankcase vent hose. Follow the hose and I'm sure you'll find the break, usually near the top. Very common. The hose exits the back of the valve cover on the passenger side. When it leaks, the fumes are sucked into the interior air intake at the base of the windshield near the center of the car. That's why you only smell it at idle. If you do purchase this car you should definitely replace the entire PCV system. Do a search for "PCV #6"on this board for a good education. The parts (hoses mainly) are not costly but I don't know what it would cost for installation. Any indy that sees Saabs will know all about it.
