If you have a 3 year time horizon, I would try to estimate how much you will need to spend on your current car for the next 3 years, based on time and miles, then compare to the 2000 9-3 you saw. Perhaps you should talk with your mechanic for a few minutes about typical repairs (and costs) your model car would need over the next 3 years based on a mileage projection: tires, belts, water pump, etc. A good Saab mechanic with experience with these cars should know at about what mileage certain things wear out. You say you have all the past maintenance records, perhaps you have already done most of the typical repairs in the last few years?
For the new car, you could do the same calculation after talking to your mechanic, maybe the dealer also has maintenance records on the 2000 9-3? Likely the newer car will need much less repairs 3 years out. So perhaps you are looking at $6500 to buy it, pay the taxes, registration fees, and maybe $1000 to $2000 for any repairs required for the next three years.
Also condsider that if you have $6500 cash to buy the new car, it may be better earning interest in the bank or a CD for the next 3 years.
