I use a pressure bleeder through the reservoir but when trying to chase out air inside the slave cylinder you can try different things.
I have even propped up the clutch pedal in pressed down position and opened the bleeder screw hoping that some air will be pushed up and out when the pressure plate forces the throw out bearing backwards.
I replaced several clutches before I learned about having to bleed the slave cylinder first and ended up with the same problem every time having to try all kinds of tricks to get the air out, but driving the car multiple times operating the clutch like crazy while driving and bleeding in between seemed to slowly let the air work its way up to the bleeder screw.
