You have to check the function of the O2 sensor while it's in the car, heated and engine running. The green wire going to the O2 sensor is where you have to check. Need to set a voltage meter at the lowest D/C voltage setting. Meter should fluctuate between 2.0 - 9.0 volts. To test the 02 control circuit, ground the green wire to the chassis and this should cause the engine to run rich. The other test can be done with a AA battery. AA battery, when new. should have 1.2 - 1.5 volts. Use an old AA battery that read 1.0 volts. Attach this to the green wire with the pos+. end of the AA battery to the green wire end and the battery neg.- ground on the chassis. Hold this until the engine start to run rough. This fools the ECU fuel management system into thinking the 02 sensor is seeing increased emissions, which causes the 02 sensor the create voltage and leans the fuel mixture. This test show the the 02 system control is operational. When 02 senor get old, they get slow and increase fuel mileage and sometime preformance. Usually, the front 02 sensor goes bad out of a two sensor system. Some have had luck with heating the 02 sensor, removed from the car, with MAP gas torch on the 02 tip a until a dull glowing red. This is said to clean/burn off any residue built-up on the platinum composite that causes the chemical/electrode reaction. (Voltage) I always use the after market, cheaper brand 02 sensors, since I can't see what the differance is.
