What can too much oil due to an engine?

Hi guys,
Out of habit I frequently top of the oil in my car. It's a habit I had with the 900 I had and it carried over to the 9-3 I own. Lately I was just topping off without checking the oil level and I was recently driving and the oil light came on very briefly. Then I pulled over and checked the oil and I noticed that it was above the maximum mark.
I have not seen the oil light since then but now I think I may be hearing some noise from the engine.
My question is what kind of damage might have I done with putting in excess oil? Also why would the light come on, doesn't it only come on if there is low oil pressure?
Thank you
