LH Inner CV joint / driver questions

I'm slowly but surely going through my 2001 9-3 SE, 5 spd, 82K miles. All suspension is original, and it's been a lot of city miles.
One thing I'm doing is one by one going through the front end to cure rattles, etc. The steering rack was oddly worn, so this was replaced...things are better.
Fishing around under the car to see what's next, I noticed the driver's side inner CV joint had a LOT of play. This would explain the vibration that has suddenly popped up, under low load, around 50MPH. The companion flange does not have any movement to the transmission.
My questions:
1. Does the "tripod" bearing / inner driver usually wear first, or will the inside of the companion flange ($$$) be worn out most likely?
2. It appears once the axle is free, and the inner boot clamp removed, this will just slide out from the companion flange. True?
3. Should I replace the inner CV (tripod bearing) with the separate part (~$70) and get a new boot? Or eEuroparts has an entire axle for $99 that is Empi brand, and described as non-servicable (which is fine with me). Any recommendations?
4. If I have to remove the companion flange, how does it come out? The factory manual just says "Use special Saab tool 89 96 654". Is there an alternate method/tool?
Thanks for any suggestions!
