I always drain using the drain plug as well, and never had any problems with it. You simply need to use a deep socket (forget the size, 9mm?) with a "screwdriver" extension. you tighten it till it comes flush with the mating surface of the radiator, and then a tiny bit more to ensure it's nice a tight. I mean, you have to use your best judgment, as it is made of plastic. Don't over tighten!
I don't know about the o-ring, but I am quite certain I did not have one. What's it looking like when fully tightened? I assume you have a radiator outside of the car?
