I retrieved the original broken end of plug that went into radiator, from down below on a cross-member. There was a tiny O-ring at the very tip of the drain plug, where it went into radiator.
Apparently new plugs from SAAB don't come with the O-ring in place. The parts guy recognized there was an O-ring, after looking at the diagram, and gave me one. But it was an external O-ring. And that did not make sense to me, after I got home and looked at it. The plug seals internally, not externally.
I got an O-ring from my local NAPA, and put it on the internal tip of the plug.
I hand tightened and had a small drip. This plug is very touchy. I had to tighten lightly and check for leaks, and repeat several times before it finally stopped dripping.
Bottom line, for a Viggen, it is MUCH easier to remove the drain plug, as opposed to removing the lower radiator hose.
I also ended up replacing the lower hose. But due to the position of the spring clamp, I had to use my remote spring clamp pliers. And it was still a huge hassle.
Summary- much easier to remove drain plug, than lower hose. But definitely a trick to install without leaks and breaking.
