The problem is that GM in its past had cars that were too close to one another, (the worst being the Cadillac Cimarron & Chevy Cavalier)... and hence all GMs suffer from that perception, where other manufactures that do the same don't. No one thinks lesser of Acuras or Lexus' that share platforms with Honda or Toyota... or thinks lesser of Audi or Porche SUVs that share with VW... or the Volvo S40 built on a Mazda platform.... or g-d forbid thinking less of Mercedes because there are Chryslers built on older MB platforms?
What is not so important is the platform that is shared, but what is attached to it... power train, suspension & steering, body, etc, and who makes the decisions. There was a recent article about the 9-4x & SRX twins about how there were certain decisions made in favor of Saab that seem to make the SRX a better vehicle... so there is Saab DNA in the Cadillac.
I've said it before & I'll say it again... humans & chimpanzees share 95%+ of their DNA, but its amazing what those differences do. So next time someone calls your Saab a re-badged Saturn or Chevy or Buick or Opel or Vauxhall, call them a re-badged monkey.
