A couple years ago the fuel pump in my 2000 9-3 occasionally made a rumbling noise for a few seconds when I turned on the ignition key. It sounded similar to the electric antenna going up, but with more low-frequency rumble (almost grinding). It would sometimes last only 2 seconds, sometimes 4 or 5, and it would happen most often after that car had been driven and then parked for awhile (it almost never occurred the first start of the day). If I cranked the motor simultaneous to this rumbling sound, the engine would misfire while trying to start, but would start fine if the sound was absent. This behavior went on for a couple months and then it stopped occurring for several months. When it began happening again I presumed that the pump would fail soon so I dropped the tank and replaced it with an aftermarket pump from a site sponsor.
Well, everything was fine....for about six months (rrrgghh) but now the problem is back again in the same form as before. I'm trying to figure out what is going on here - I don't want to simply presume that I got an inferior pump and do the same repair over again. I originally thought the noise was evidence of a worn pump getting close to failure, but I have to admit that the pump never actually quit. I'm wondering if the noise is actually cavitation, and if so, is that a sign of a failing pump or possibly something else in the fuel delivery system? FYI, I also changed out the one-way check valve on the feed line when I changed the pump and I keep up with the scheduled filter changes.
So what do you folks know? I've done a search of recent posts, and although there are tons of posts about fuel pump failure and replacement, I've found none that mentions the noise I'm experiencing as part of the problem. It seems like pumps commonly just silently quit (although sometimes intermittently). Has anyone out there know specifically what might be causing this noise?
