I can also add that being in the '3' position is different than being in 3rd gear in the 'D' position due to the locking torque converter. In 'D' it only locks in 4th gear once you hit about 45-50mph, but in '3' it will lock in 3rd gear from about 35mph. This will give you more controlled acceleration and good engine-braking when you're off the throttle, instead of coasting.
A while back I found a PDF specification document for these Aisin-Warner 50-40LE transmissions. More than you ever wanted to know, but it was a fascinating read for me as a mechanical engineer. The highlight was a chart that described exactly what was going on in each shifter position, in terms of the various gears, clutches and belts. Of note is that in the '1' position, a special clutch engages to give you engine-braking at very low speeds. I sometimes use this to control my speed when creeping along in heavy traffic.
By the way, I found that it's possible to get smoother downshifts if you attempt to rev-match the way one would with a manual transmission. About a half-second after moving the shifter down, firmly tap the accelerator as the transmission shifts gears. It takes some practice to get the timing right, but it makes dropping it into 3rd in hilly areas or on twisty roads that much more fun!
