Why are you asking these questions? Have you ever driven a manual? All you need to know are manuals are terrible if you deal with lots of gridlock/stop and go traffic, manuals typically get better gas mileage, put more power to the ground, are more fun to drive, give you more driving control, just to name a few. Automatics are, well, good for heavy traffic or those that refuse to drive a manual. That's what it comes down to IMHO. No gear in a manual is for any one thing. You can use any gear to provide engine braking going down a hill, it just matters how fast you're going. If you're going down a 55 mph road, you'd put it in 4th to provide engine braking. If you're doing 25, you'd have it in 2nd, etc. W is a useless feature in my opinion on automatics, all it does is eliminate the use of 1st gear, making the engine transmit less torque to the wheels versus 1st gear (or just feather the throttle because you have a brain). S is good, and I always engage it because it shortens shifts (creating less wear on the clutch packs), and allows the engine to rev out higher at WOT, so you're less likely to bog down when it upshifts. You will leave it in D (or overdrive) all the time unless you find yourself in a situation where the transmission is constantly going from 3-4-3-4-3.... which not only creates more wear on the clutches, but heats up the transmission more and leads to even more wear. On one hand it sounds like you (no offense, but it appears this way) know nothing about the concept of driving a manual and should maybe stay away from it, but on the other hand anyone can learn. All in all, I would pick a manual whenever possible.
