So if it happens again, open to the hood to speed up cooling down process of the gear selector switch, it the car starts up quicker than if you keep the hood closed, it is probably the switch.
This has to be tested several times to get a bench mark of improvements.
But that's as far as you can get without getting down and dirty and do some real testing.
So in reality, the time spent trying to pin point the problem to not spend any money might cost you more in frustration and running late than it would have cost to replace the gear selector switch right away.
