I've heard the theory that the closer you get to the GM years/influence the less reliable Saabs became. Well, since they all came out of the same Factory, except for the 'verts, so I don't see that as a factor, unless GM began leaving bottles of Aquavit around the plant in some diabolical plot to make the worker &*%^-up a lot. Many componants are sourced on the world market, so unless Bosch or Valeo was conspiring with GM execs to ship all the crap parts which failed QC testing to Saab in exchange for suitcases full of money, I don't see that as a factor either. My view is that reliability of any older car is a function of the level of maintenance it has received, be it a Saab, a Fiat or a Benz, a beat-up neglected car is just that and a cream puff with regular service by a pro and new wear parts when required over its lifetime is just that too. Parking it outside under a waterfall all year round doesn't help either, a heated dry garage is always better. Our cars are not simple, it takes a trained and knowledable mechanic for more than a few jobs, a ham-handed guy who happens to own a lot of tools and who don't like "furrin'" cars can make you wish you had a Toyota...
Best,
John
